Description
Inglourious Basterds begins in German-occupied France, where Shoshanna Dreyfus (Mélanie Laurent) witnesses the execution of her family at the hand of Nazi Colonel Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz). Shosanna narrowly escapes and flees to Paris, where she forges a new identity as the owner and operator of a cinema.
Elsewhere in Europe, Lieutenant Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) organizes a group of Jewish soldiers to engage in targeted acts of retribution. Known to their enemy as "The Basterds," Raine's squad joins German actress and undercover agent Bridget Von Hammersmark (Diane Kruger) on a mission to take down the leaders of The Third Reich. Fates converge under a cinema marquee, where Shosanna is poised to carry out a revenge plan of her own...
Winner of the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz.
Winner of the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz.
Here are four films that inspired Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds:
Inglorious Bastards: Tarantino's title is a take-off of the 1978 cult war film starring Scandinavian hard man Bo Svenson (Kill Bill 2).
The Dirty Dozen: This super-manly, Lee Marvin-starring military movie sees 12 US convicts sent to take down a group of German officers.
The Battle Of Algiers: The Good, The Bad & The Ugly composer Ennio Morricone's "Algiers, November 1954", from Gillo Pontecorvo's scintillating anti-war film, slots in perfectly.
Once Upon A Time In The West: Quentin's epic opening scene is a homage to Sergio Leone's classic western starring Henry Fonda.

Comments about UNIVERSAL Inglourious Basterds:
Enjoy Sergio Leone's ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST? Well, here it is revisited as ONCE UPON A TIME... IN NAZI OCCUPIED FRANCE! Great movie much misunderstood by many critics. It's simply a spaghetti western reimagined with a World War Two setting. Gantz as the Nazi is superb. Great set-pieces and nice, long, slow dawn out scenes in a true Sergio Leone style. Tarantino has a ball - and so will you!

Comments about UNIVERSAL Inglourious Basterds:
When I am in the mood for a good action film I always prefer a Tarantino film. While some would argue that the film was too long, I argue that it is just long enough. The characters and story are compelling enough that I don't get bored and the lack of historical accuracy isn't a problem, it's a different perspective on things.

Comments about UNIVERSAL Inglourious Basterds:
Good to see so many positive reviews for this title here - I have several friends who were disappointed in this, because they went in expecting an all-out action war movie such as 'The Dirty Dozen', and instead got something that was much more plot driven.
It's a war film yes, and when it get does get violent, that violence is savage & bloody. But this is also a Tarantino movie, so the emphasis is more on story, characters and conversation...with occasional outbreaks of violence and carnage.
Being a fan of QT's work, I went into this expecting something quite different from 'your average war movie' and wasn't disappointed. It had me engaged from beginning to end, and you can't ask much more than that from a film.
...Great movie, highly recommended.

Comments about UNIVERSAL Inglourious Basterds:
As a Tarantino fan, i can't say that this was my favorite movie. I found it a bit disappointing - frankly, a little predictable (which is not at all common when it comes to Tarantino's movies). Having said that, this is also a stage for some of the finest performances of its release year and it is a very original idea with some really funny observations. This is nothing if not entertaining!
